What I Hope Happens for the Watchmen Prequels

With the disappointing news that the Watchmen prequels are happening, I thought I’d weigh in with what I’m hoping for them—rather than bitching about what’s inevitably going to be wrong with them.

First,

Captain Metropolis and Hooded Justice: In the comics, and in subsequent interviews Allan Moore has alluded to these two being lovers. It seems Hooded Justice was an abusive asshole who regularly beat Captain Metropolis as well as rent boys and runaways. I hope that Captain Metropolis is not a woman in the refrigerator; I hope the character is treated with some respect, and that this relationship is not presented as a joke.

The Silhouette: I hope we learn much more about her relationship—and I hope she’s given a happier one than Captain and Hooded Justice. I know it’s going to end with her murdered in her apartment, but I hope she’s less of a mystery character when that happens.

Dr. Manhattan: Any dude who can have a orgy with his girlfriend and several versions of himself can definitely hook up with a dude.

Finally, I hope that Ozymandias is given a gay background. There are allusions to it in the comics, and there is a folder labled “boys” on his computer in the 2009 movie. I hope they continue this thread and make it canon. I don’t need him to have a boyfriend, but I do hope to see him getting a phone call with at least semi-nude gentleman in the background.

Perhaps this Ozymandias could offer a counterpoint to the early gay characters—someone who is neither murdered nor involved in a horrifyingly abusive relationship.
